In Loving Memory of Thomas W "Tom" Cregon
Born in Washington, D.C. on November 16, 1959, Tom lived a full and joyful life rooted in loyalty, humor, and love for family and friends. For over forty years, he worked as an engineer in Washington, D.C., where his expertise and quick wit made him not just a valued colleague but a friend to many.
In 2021, Tom retired to Merritt, North Carolina, with his wife, Trish—a move that marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with peace, gratitude, and community. He often spoke about how thankful he was for their wonderful neighbors and the sense of belonging they found there. During his illness, that community surrounded them with kindness and care, which meant the world to both Tom and Trish.
As happy and grateful Tom was for the welcoming sense of community Merritt had offered, Tom loved sharing stories about living in Maryland and crab feasts with the people he loved. Be it early life in Maryland or retirement years in North Carolina, Tom had recently mentioned that the constant in his life and a deep source of peace, was time with his wife Trish.
Those who knew Tom will remember that laughter followed him everywhere. He had a way of making any gathering more joyful and far more fun. In retirement, he poured his energy into the things he loved—fishing, working on his hot rod, riding his motorcycle, and tackling endless home projects. But his greatest joy came from adventures shared with his son, Tommy. Whether they were racing cars, ziplining through the mountains, exploring a new brewery, or simply planning the next outing, those were the moments that lit Tom up the most.
Tom and Trish shared a love for animals that extended far beyond their own home. Together, they volunteered with an animal rescue for over twenty years, always ready to take in a pet that needed a safe place and a little extra love.
Tom was immensely proud of his Irish heritage, and his deep sense of patriotism was equally strong. A member of the 65th Infantry Association, he attended reunions across the country and spent countless hours listening to and honoring the stories of World War II veterans. Tom never passed a service member without stopping to thank them.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Patricia “Trish” Cregon (née Fields); his devoted son Tom, and daughter-in-law, Jaclyn (Jacky) Cregon, loved by Tom and Trish as their own; his sisters Deborah (Pete) Quimby of Punta Gorda, FL, and Melonie Abernathy of Clearwater, FL; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews across the country who adored him. He was preceded in death by his father John Patrick Cregon, Jr. (1999) and his cherished mother, Patricia Harrigan (2016).
The family also wants to mention Tom’s Aunt Kathy Holden who was always there for him and he loved and thought of her as his second mother.
Tom lived his life with open arms and an open heart—quick to laugh, ready to lend a hand, and always grateful for the simple joys. His presence filled every space with warmth, and his absence leaves a quiet ache in the hearts of those who loved him. But his spirit endures—in every story told, every laugh remembered, and every moment shared in his honor.
