Valerie A. Gildersleeve

Valerie A. Gildersleeve, aged 66, of Bowie, MD, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2026 at home in Bowie, MD. Born on April 20, 1960 in Spain. Valerie was the beloved daughter of Walter and Shirley Gildersleeve (deceased). She is cherished and loved and will be dearly missed.

As a military child Valerie spent time in numerous states and countries including Seville, Spain and Okinawa, Japan with her parents and siblings. The family later resided in Bowie, MD (1968). As a young adult she moved to Northern Virginia where she spent many years. She loved her time at the National School Boards Association (NSBA) as a meeting planner where she got to travel, attend many events and made lifelong friendships. In 2013 she moved back to Bowie to her family home to care for her mother, Shirley, whom she loved dearly until she passed in 2021.

A devoted daughter, sister, beloved Aunt (and Great Aunt), Godmother and friend. Valerie was a Christian and attended Grace Baptist Church with her mom. She enjoyed her family, and her many precious cats she’s had over the years, often taking in strays or kitties needing a home. She was an animal lover and cared deeply for protecting them. Admired for her dimples and beautiful voice as she loved to sing. Valerie always had a witty joke and a laugh for friends, strangers and the many doctors/staff caring for her.

Valerie was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Shirley Gildersleeve, brothers Larry Gildersleeve and Thomas Gildersleeve, sister Linda Ponta and great-nieces Lauren and Loryn. She is survived by her brother Steve Gildersleeve (Linda) and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Valerie will be buried close by her sister, Linda, at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD.
