Varon Carlton Rollins, the son of the late Jean T. Rollins Andrews, departed his earthly home on Friday, January 30, 2026, in Bowie, MD. Varon grew up in the downtown area of Portsmouth, VA where he attended Third Baptist Church. His educational journey included attending Green Street and Riddick Weaver Elementary schools; and Harry Hunt Jr. High before graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1970.

Known for his world class speed, agility, and white cleats on the football field, Varon was a world class sprinter and held the state title in the 100-yard dash, by posting a lightning speed of 9.6 seconds.

During his senior year, he would cement his legacy in the folklore of Wilson legends by rushing for over 230 yards against Craddock High School, which was a scholastic state record at the time.

Varon set the standard for athletic excellence in track and football during the sixties and seventies at Wilson High School. In recognition of his athletic distinction and legacy, he was inducted

in the Wilson Orange and Blue Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

After leaving Wilson, he would go on to attend Elizabeth City and Norfolk State Universities. Varon served in the United States Air Force with duty stations in Texas, Alabama, Colorado and Thailand. After returning from his military service, he held federal civilian positions as a Welder at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a Machinist at the U.S. Post Office and the U.S. Patent Office, and a Facilities Worker at the Pentagon. He retired in 2023 as a civilian employee with over 50 years of federal service.

In addition to his mother, Varon was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Winnie T. Mason; one sister, Barbara R. Tucker (Thomas); and one brother, Dwight J. Rollins.

His memory is treasured in the hearts and minds of his two sons, De-Wain I. Brown of Georgia and Varon C. Tucker of Bowie MD; two granddaughters, Cheyenne and Brianna of Georgia; one brother, Wayne E. Rollins (Garlinda) of Accokeek, MD; three sisters, Denise D. Rollins and Deborah C. Franklin (Lawrence) of Portsmouth, VA; and Morris C. Staton (Kinneaird) of Suffolk, VA.

He will also be fondly remembered by one sister-in-law, Juanita H. Rollins of Springdale, MD, and special friend, Debbie Tucker of Bowie, MD; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Varon will always be thought of for his quick wit; his intellectual conversations and his ability to overcome the biggest challenge of life; for which he thanked God for His love, grace and mercy in helping him to do so. He will truly be missed!
