William D. Amos (Bill), 91
Bowie, MD
William D. “Bill” Amos passed away peacefully at home on July 1, 2025, to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior. Born on February 21, 1934, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Harry V. Amos and O. Agnes Haynes, he had fond memories of growing up with his grandparents Edward G. Humphries and Elda Lunsford Humphries, and spending time on the family farm with Uncle Jim, Aunt Sis, and cousin Frankie.
Bill graduated from Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C., where he played football and various other sports. It was there that he met the love of his life, Jacklyn M. Mayo. The two were married in March 1954 and shared 63 wonderful years together.
He went on to attend George Washington University (though he always said he would have preferred to accept his scholarship offer to the University of Tennessee), where he pursued a degree in electrical engineering and earned All-American honors as a tackle on the football team. Bill was drafted by the Washington Redskins, but an off-season injury prevented him from playing professionally.
Bill poured his passion for sports into the community, coaching football for the Belair (Bowie) Boys Club and winning several championships. He served as President of the Belair Bath & Tennis Swim Club and was a beloved swim team starter and referee for many years. Later in life, he became an avid golfer and worked at the local Bowie Golf Course after retiring. He was the biggest Redskins fan and never missed a game-coaching enthusiastically from his recliner every season. HTTR!
Professionally, Bill worked as an electrical engineer and made significant contributions to the design and electrical plans for the Watergate Building and the Washington, D.C. Metro system. He was a devoted family man and a loving father to five daughters.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jackie; his brothers Donald Amos and James Haynes; his grandson Alexander Paul; and great-granddaughter Lillian Thompson.
He is survived by his daughters: Carolyn Amos Wright; Marlene Amos Schreiner (Tim); Brenda Amos Obern (Dave); Deanna M. Amos (Gunther); and Kelly Amos Coloe (Tom). He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Bill Thompson (Denise), Bryan Thompson (Jessica), Beau Thompson, Sean Thompson (Sarah), Ashleigh Wright, James Hill (Erin), Ginger Walcutt (Chris), Megan Offsie (Josh), and Brandon Coloe (Mehie); fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his granddogs Luna and Hank; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill now has the best seat in the house to watch the Redskins win the Super Bowl this year — Hail!
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Chesapeake for their compassionate care during Bill’s final days.
A celebration of Bill’s life is planned for September 6, 2025 from 1-5pm at his home.
