William Marshall Hughes

December 16, 1936 — November 21, 2025

Crofton, Maryland

Marshall Hughes, a resident of Crofton, Maryland, went to heaven to be with his wife Jo Ann on November 21, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, he was the first born of 8 children by his parents, Billy and Rachel Hughes. He met and married the love of his life, Jo Ann Sylvester, and they spent nearly 68 years together. Marshall attended Randolph Macon College and graduated with a degree in Psychology. He enjoyed playing on the baseball team, a part of the “slugging outfield.” After graduation he taught US government and history in addition to coaching the men’s basketball team at Brunswick High School in Lawrenceville, VA. In 1963 his team became District Champions with a record of 18-1 and Marshall was awarded the Coach of the Year award.

The family later moved to Maryland where he worked at Washington Mack Trucks, working his way to becoming President of that company. Later he worked for Educator’s Mutual where he was in the “President’s Club,” and in sales for Bowman Distribution before retirement. For recreation, he enjoyed boating, hanging out with their friends, working on house “projects,” watching the Washington Redskins, and anything and everything Christmas. After retirement, Marshall and Jo Ann lived in Easton, MD where he enjoyed working on his trains and woodworking projects. The house was always decorated for Christmas early. They both enjoyed going out on the boat and just spending time together with their family. Most of all, Marshall was a very devoted husband, taking care of Jo Ann through a long illness, never leaving her side. His love and devotion to her was witnessed by everyone around him.

Marshall is survived by his two children Vicki Lynn Peters (Bob) of Crofton, MD and Frederick Marshall Hughes (Robbi) of Chester, MD. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Lloyd Pugh; his sister-in-law Shirley Levendoski (Dick); and sister-in-law Julie Hughes. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Jonathan Hughes (Kaitlyn), Joe Stocker, Justin Stocker, Lindsey Steele (Jason), Tyler Hughes, Sarah (Stocker) Hughes (Josh), and Anthony Hughes (Jessica), along with eleven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marshall’s name to Hospice of the Chesapeake.
