It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Winston ‘Jimmy’ Chen, age 75, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, after a long and heroic battle with illness.
Jimmy was born on December 9, 1949, in Mullett Hall, Clarendon, Jamaica, to Vincent Chen Sang and Rhona (nee Cato) and was the oldest of their seven children. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Ransford ‘Fitz’, Noel ‘Tony’, and Patrick.
Jimmy attended Campion College and Clarendon College, where he was a dedicated student and an enthusiastic athlete. He ran track in high school and remained a lifelong supporter of the sport. After graduation, he worked for a few years before emigrating to Washington, DC. He attended Prince George’s Community College, Howard University, and briefly the University of Maryland, before following his passion for computers into a new career path.
Along the way, he married his beloved wife, Maureen, with whom he shared nearly 52 years of love, partnership, and family. Their union was blessed with two children and four grandchildren. Jimmy was deeply devoted to his family. He cherished family gatherings, valued time spent with his children and grandchildren, and nurtured close relationships with extended relatives both near and far. His love of family was evident in the way he celebrated milestones, supported loved ones, and always stayed connected.
Jimmy also had a vibrant sense of humor that brought joy to those around him. His wit and smile were a constant presence, making family and friends feel at ease and always welcome in his company.
He was a student of the world—curious, informed, and deeply interested in cultures, geography, history, and nature. He had a passion for music, especially reggae and R&B/soul, and was an avid sports fan. Jimmy supported local sports teams with great enthusiasm, particularly the Washington Commanders. He was also a passionate follower of the Jamaican track and field team, proudly cheering them on during international competitions.
One of his favorite traditions was enjoying the Penn Relays with Maureen—a cherished time where his love for track, culture, and companionship came together in celebration.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Maureen; his beloved children: daughter Lisa, and son Michael ‘Jeff’ (Kiana); dear nephew Wayne (Takara); cherished grandchildren Mehki, Micah, Alissa, and Giannis; his sisters and brothers: Gloria, Yvonne, Oliver (Karen), and Robert (Paula); and a host of dear aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jimmy’s legacy of warmth, wisdom, and wit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
